Physicians Insurers Association of America is a trade association representing medical liability insurance carriers known as medical malpractice insurers. The Association was started in 1977 as result of claims which tripled during that time period. It has a membership requirement that every company be owned or operated by physicians. Some hospital insurance companies exist solely to meet the needs of the hospital. There has not been a consistent increase of claims. In fact, presently claims have fallen off a bit. Two-thirds of claims are either rejected or dropped. Less than 4-5% go forward through the court system.
