Shutting Down Nuclear Plants

In 1979 Don Eichelberger joined the Abalone Alliance which formed in 1977 to oppose the construction of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant using non-violent direct action. Don began by participating in a 38 day sit-in at the capital offices of then-Governor, Jerry Brown, in an effort to get him to use his emergency powers to shut down the Rancho Seco Reactor, a twin of Three Mile Island.

Don was a core organizer in Sonoma County for direct civil disobedience actions at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Reactor in 1981 and 1984. He also worked on a number of other campaigns during those years, including exposing the annual secret summer retreat of the ruling elite at Bohemian Grove, along the Russian River in Sonoma County.

In 1984, he helped transition the statewide organizing office of the Abalone Alliance in San Francisco into the non-profit safe energy clearinghouse it is today. Over the years, the all-volunteer staff have continued to lend organizing support and do local outreach on behalf of stopping nuclear power and promoting safe, alternative energy as well as supporting the causes of peace and social justice.

During 1985-87, he helped produce a weekly radio show on KUSF, called "Rad Radio- Radioactivity." As DJ Abel Tudu, he helped with the events calendar, music, theater and coverage of protest events.

Since 1984, among other efforts, Abalone Alliance Safe Energy Clearinghouse have:

* organized a local chapter of Big Mountain Support Group to protest uranium mining on native lands;

* acted as interveners in PG&E's efforts before the Public Utilities Commission to pay for Diablo Canyon's ten fold cost overrun;

* during 1990-94, they helped establish the term "environmental justice" while helping organize People's Earth Days in Bayview-Hunter's Point;

* gave organizing support to oppose South African Apartheid, worked to protect old growth forests from tree cutting at Headwaters, and called for an end to US involvement in Central America; and

* were instrumental in initiating the successful effort to stop the proposed Ward Valley Nuclear Waste Dump from dumping so-called "low-level" nuclear wastes in to unlined trenches in critical habitat for endangered species;

* was also instrumental in the late-1980's helping found the emerging US Green Movement/Party, including a coordinating role in writing the Green Platform planks on Nuclear Power, Safe Energy and Nuclear Waste..

The evolving Energy Net website is a wealth of historical information, as well as useful resources. Although it disbanded in 1985, the Alliance did raise consciousness, delayed the operation of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. They did succeed in winning over public opinion and halting the Nuclear Industry's plans to construct even more nuclear plants in the US. Sadly, one consequence of that success was the push by the nuclear industry into other countries, including Japan. Local, national, and international anti-nuclear groups arise and diminish in response to the threats and disasters created by the nuclear industry. The Nuclear Information and Resource Service in Maryland serves the larger grassroots network to identify what is happening in Washington DC, the nation and the world by providing reliable timely information on nuclear issues.

Recently Don organized a rally, speak-out at the San Francisco Federal Building on the 25th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster to push for the shutting down of the Diablo Canyon and San Onofre Nuclear Power Plants. There is widespread grassroots opposition against nuclear power, but the mainstream media and government are still championing the nuclear industry. We will discuss the lessons learned over the past few decades at home and abroad, and what we can do to stop the nuclear industry, and support sustainable, renewable energy.

View the Interview with Dr. Alexey Yablokov co-author of "Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment" recorded March 27, 2011. Dr. Alexey Yablokov is a prominent Russian scientist, environmentalist, former member of the USSR parliament, and environmental advisor to former Russian President Boris Yeltsin and the Gorbachev administration whose book shatters the mainstream myth downplaying the effects of the Chernobyl disaster and speaks out strongly against nuclear power, calling for a shut down of all nuclear reactors in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

Don became active in the Green Party of California during the registration drive in 1990. He served on the San Francisco Green Party County Council and co-coordinated the Green Party of California Energy Working Group from 1999-2006.

Inspired by the assault on civil rights by the Bush administration, he became less active in politics and began anew the study of music. He feels that revolution will come more easily when people can hum its theme song, and has written about 50 songs to date, including one very appropriate to the current crisis entitled Here We Go Again.

In 1993, Carol Brouillet edited a book entitled The Invisible Nuclear War, The Health Effects of Low Level Radiation, The Massive Government Cover-Up, and the Continuing Battle by the Nuclear Powers Against All Life on Earth.

Afghanistan and Empire

Elizabeth Gould and Paul Fitzgerald co-authored Crossing Zero - The AfPak War at the Turning Point of American Empire. For decades they have devoted their lives to sharing their understanding of Afghanistan. They have written multiple books, and articles on the subject, in addition to films, and a screenplay. They also wrote- Invisible History:Afghanistan's Untold Story an effort to correct the record about the history of Afghanistan from the view of the Afghan people. They witnessed firsthand how the Afghan story has been butchered, spun, twisted by the corporate media to mask the disastrous American policies in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the larger region.

Thirty years ago they were the first journalists to enter Afghanistan in the wake of the Soviet invasion. They saw behind the curtain, they witnessed and played their own parts in the drama of dying empires, power grabs, the agony of a country ripped apart by war, the struggle for survival and sanity amidst the insane logic of geopolitical games. They discovered Afghanistan's rich history and their own, from dreams, journeys, research, and a courageous effort to understand and participate in the healing process.

They co-authored a white paper entitled Restoring Afghanistans Tribal Balance - An indigenous peace process for unifying a shattered nation drawing from ancient tribal processes and proposing a way for peace and stability for Afghans, by Afghans.

Their earlier documentaries and books drew them to the attention of filmmaker, Oliver Stone. They also have spoken in documentaries such as Our Own Private Bin Laden.

Heist - The Movie

Join Donald Goldmacher and Frances Causey, the producers of a new movie, Heist - Who Ripped Off Our Economy and How to Make It Right which is still under construction, they are working on the final edits now, to discuss the issues that are threatening the bulk of Americans and humanity at this time.

Their film tells the story of how corporations and their political allies in Congress, orchestrated the greatest theft in history -- the robbery of Americans' prosperity, savings, and retirement security. Heist exposes how free-market extremists steadily dismantled the regulatory protections that the New Deal had built to prevent a repeat of the 1929 Wall Street crash.

The film is a labor of love that evolved organically and has the potential to be a major organizing tool in challenging the rich and powerful's blatant attack upon the vast majority of people. While the main focus is the United States, this story is a global story, repeated in country after country where political power is bought, corrupted and bent to serve corporate interests, regardless of the human and environmental costs.

To simply survive, people are organizing and challenging the attacks upon their livelihoods, their savings, their homes, their hopes for the future.

Donald Goldmacher is a psychiatrist and filmmaker. His films include: Do No Harm, an expose of the pharmaceutical industry.Ruthie and Connie; Every Room in the House an award looking look at domestic partners, and Helping Your Baby Sleep Through the Night. He also served as director of Planning for the California Department of Health, and was the director of Mental Health, Alcohol, and Drug Abuse Services of Contra Costa County, CA.

Frances Causey began a career in broadcasting and film in 1987 as an entry-level video journalist in Atlanta for Cable News Network (CNN). She became Senior National Assignment Editor and eventually a producer in the New York bureau. She covered the most important stories of the late eighties and nineties and was a senior member of a team honored with News and Documentary Emmys for coverage of both the Olympic Park and Oklahoma City bombings in 1995 and 1996.

Hear how you can get involved, organize, support the grassroots efforts to reclaim control over our governments, the workplace, the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the lives we lead.

Fukushima, Radiation, Emerging Realities, Health

Christopher Rudy, is a radio talk-show host of ‘Cosmic Love'. Having developed three holistic health centers over 20 years, specializing in ultramolecular 'quantum medicine', Christopher looks at the radiation issue now as a potential ‘trigger event’ of serious consequences. His concern is that many have already been whacked by the accumulated effect of airport scanners, CAT scans, mammograms, X-rays, cell phones and electronic pollution in general.

Is the Fukushima meltdown like a giant dirty bomb on steroids? Do you wonder if there’s a cover-up as to serious long-term dangers? Would you agree that your immune system is your first line of defense against the mutagenic effect of radiation fallout?

Christopher’s recent article, ‘Radiation Alert - Be Aware and Prepare’ highlights his concerns… that the short and long time affect across America will be accelerated degradation of our already stressed-out immune systems in general and afflicted DNA health in particular. DNA repair, regeneration and immune system rejuvenation is the subject of life-extension which is really the cellular ‘reboot’ issue with the dangers of ionizing radiation. DNA is the blueprint of health, and the aging process correlates directly to the breakdown of the ability of the body to replicate healthy DNA.

There are spiritual, mental, emotional and physical components to a holistic process for optimizing a healthy immune system with DNA integrity. Synergy of these all-connected factors is where the best results naturally occur. Or as Christopher says, “Pure intention focuses attention for our whole health’s ascension.”

Masaru Emoto wrote- "When we describe the meaning of Japanese word 'Fukushima', 'Fuku' means 'lucky' and 'shima' is 'island'. Let's make the disaster bring good luck!" Let us hope a deeper understanding of what is going on will be the catalyst for a transformation of human consciousness to assist us from the path of self destruction towards healing and conscious evolution.

Our visionary guest, Christopher Rudy, has a deep knowledge of healing, systems, and seeing the larger patterns and cycles in human development. I edited a book years ago entitled The Invisible Nuclear War: The Effects of Low-level Radiation, the Massive Government Cover-up, and the Continuing Battle waged by the Nuclear Powers Against All Life on Earth and recently an article entitled Nuclear Family, Nuclear Stories. Together, we will discuss finding balance, maintaining health and spiritual energy when the systems that we have known are stressed and failing. We'll look at the new insights, possibilities that are emerging, as the limitations of the limited thinking of the past become apparent.

Japan's needs at this time are great and they are asking for help from the international community. My Japanese friends, Yumi Kikuchi and her husband Gen Morita who also are anti-nuclear, peace and truth activists have begun a project to evacuate pregnant women and family with infant and children that are in a 100 Km radius from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant with radioactive contamination. This is a small grassroots effort and I trust that donations will really help those in need.

High Level Crimes, Seeking Justice

Gerard Ange has an impressive resume. His skills include producing and providing broadcast services for the major networks, famous musicians, the White House, major corporations. He was very successful and spent three years putting together a project called "World Indigenous Network," a television network designed to give indigenous people a greater voice and assist them economically to preserve and strengthen their culture. He was in the process of securing $50,000,000 in first round funding when quite suddenly his website was stolen from him- along with all the email accounts, and vital communications. His attempt to seek justice, his seven year ordeal with the court system, destroyed his companies, his life and wiped him out financially. At the same time, he became "politicized" and learned from his unique position of the methods and modus operandi of those wielding great power how the courts and media are used to fragment and control the public.

He has used his considerable skills and knowledge to educate and inform others via the internet and has been heavily targeted for his efforts, apparently to destroy his capacity to share his insights.

His articles can be found here and his videos can be found here.

Gasland, Fracking, Josh Fox and America's Journey

Guests - Josh Fox, Emily Green

Gasland was recently nominated for an Academy Award. A recipient of the Special Jury Award at Sundance Film Festival and a run on HBO has helped this outstanding documentary to draw public attention to one of the most serious environmental threats to the country and to the world's precious fresh water- the process of "fracking" or "hydraulic fracturing."

The sheer magnitude of the problem is emotionally overwhelming and under-reported. Josh Fox's personal narrative, woven in with the stories of others who have been seduced or affected by lucrative offers from the gas companies who promote "clean energy" - natural gas as a healthy solution to "foreign oil" dispels the dominant myth, connects the dots, paints a frightening picture of a growing problem that demands the immediate attention of the public, if we are going to have any chance at all to save our land, our water, our country from poisonous destruction.

The film begins as a young man's personal journey, exploration in response to a lucrative offer from the gas company to drill for gas on his land. He uses his film making skills and becomes a bit of an investigative journalist as he learns more about the situation. The film's website becomes a launchpad for action, organizing efforts, to lobby for protective legislation and against the dismantling of safeguards designed to protect the public.

Emily Green is an award winning journalist who writes for the Los Angeles Times and keeps up a blog entitled Chance of Rain devoted to water, politics, the environment and gardening. She has written and done a lot of research on the subject of fracking.

SoLa Louisiana Water Stories with Jon Bowermaster

Jon Bowermaster went to Louisiana in 2008 to make a film about water. He was nearly finished with SoLa Louisiana Water Stories when the Gulf Oil disaster took him and most folks in Louisiana and the world by surprise. He edited it into his unique film about a beautiful, precious place and culture that has suffered a disastrous ecological attack, which has subsequently been compounded by BP's response which continues to this day to threaten this region.

Everywhere in Southern Louisiana there’s water – rivers, bayous, swamps, the Mississippi River, the Gulf of Mexico. And everyone in Cajun Country has a water story, or two or three or more. Its waterways supported the biggest economies in Louisiana – a $63 billion a year oil and gas industry, a $200 million a year fishing business, tourism and recreational sports.

Remembering Bagua

Anna Luisa Daigneault is an anthropologist, musician and activist from Montreal. She documents endangered indigenous oral history and music in the Peruvian Amazon. Her first film, http://rememberingbagua.blogspot.com/ Remembering Bagua, made with visual artist Bronwen Moen, focuses on the massacre that took place in Bagua, Peru, where indigenous activists protested government laws that allow oil and gas companies to enter the Amazon region without adequately consulting the indigenous people.

The struggle that Anna documents is hardly unique to Peru, but a global one. Her film and work raises the question of how those of us living near and far from oil producing regions can help transition humanity from our http://dailycensored.com/2011/02/07/oilpocalypse-now-%C2%AD-beneath-the-surface/ deadly addiction to oil.

The History, Reality, and Future of Cooperatives

John Restakis is the author of Humanizing the Economy - Co-operatives in the Age of Capital. Active in the co-op movement for 15 years, currently he is the Executive Director of the BC Co-operative Association and has been a consultant for co-op development projects in Africa and Asia

He identifies the co-operative movement with over 800 million members in 85 countries as the most powerful grassroots movement in the world. The book is a fascinating look at the history, evolutionary development, and current challenges facing the growing movement in an era of financial crisis. He describes in detail Robert Owen's attempts in New Lanark, Scotland to create a co-operative model which would use the market to meet the needs of all members of society in the 1800's followed by the humble beginnings of the Rochdale co-op in 1844 which succeeded where other attempts had failed. The amazing stories of successful co-operatives in Italy, Japan, Calcutta, Argentina offer tremendous insights into the transformative dimensions of collective efforts for the common good.

A great resource for those interested in starting or joining a co-operative in the United States is the National Co-operative Business Association.
