The Dr. Peter Breggin Hour - 11/21/11

Guest: Dr. Tim Scott

My marvelous guest Dr. Tim Scott is a former minister, a psychotherapist, a retired professor of psychology, an entrepreneur, scientist, author of a very solid scientific critique of psychiatric drugs, and a man who believes that values derive from God and should be a part of therapy and a purposeful life.

I appreciate your attempt to educate your guest about psychiatry, but his notion that only religion informs morality is wrong and stupid. Religion and religiousity is responsible for horrible and unjustified intolerance and is always on the wrong side of our fight for tolerance and humane treatment of each other.

In reply to Ann: where do you think the concept "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" comes from?

Excellent episode! I completely agree with both you and Dr. Scott and am hoping that more people will be exposed to your valuable work. I appreciated Dr. Scott's book, America Fooled which was not only readable but thoroughly researched and documented! Personally, my faith in Jesus continues to be a source of strength and joy even in the midst of very difficult circumstances, and the Bible will always be the perfect guide for life and good mental health. The review by Ann is both right and wrong. Yes, "religion" has been responsible for unjustified intolerance at times but is hardly "always" on the wrong side. --Besides it's not religion but a relationship with Jesus that results in the joy-filled life where one can experience optimum mental health.

I appreciate the interview with Dr. Scott. I have been through many difficult times in my life, mostly brought by other people. I can attest, if it were not for my relationship with God, I would not have pulled through those times. God is greater than our pain and any problems we face. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.

Jesus is gentle and protective with children, compassionate and tender with the hurting and a champion for the broken. He has certainly been all those things to me. I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Scott and those believe that only through a relationship with Him can we truly be at peace and whole. Romans5:1,2

I agree completely with Dr. Scott as God created man in his image and provided him with all that was needed to live a healthy and productive life without these drugs. A daily life which follows Gods instruction provided through his word will experience the joys of this life. As we draw close to the father through his son we will rely on him to guide us through the ups and downs of life.
