Deborah reports on two happy animal rescue stories from the Tsunami in Japan.  Does your dog stay home alone too much? That depends on the type of dog says Deborah.  Author and Certified Animal Behaviorist, Darlene Arden, joins Deborah to talk about her new book, ‘The Complete Cat’s Meow’ now on Amazon and in stores.  Cat health, training, behavior, communication, mischief, exercise and all stages from kitten to senior are covered in this new book that dispels myths and helps you understand your cat. Deborah and Darlene discuss animal training topics as broad as nature vs. nurture in cats and canines, and as pointed as how not to teach your cat to stay off the counter.   Betty White (feline friend extraordinaire) gave ‘the Complete Cat’s Meow’ a great review and Darlene tells us about meeting Bob Barker  who is  currently offering $100,000. to help an animal get a much needed checkup. PETS IN EGYPT NEED HELP!

Did you know that the Giza zoo was abandoned leaving the animals with no keepers and no food. The shelters have run out of food too and foreigners have evacuated dumping even more pets on their doorsteps.  Remember the horses and donkeys you saw in the middle of the action on the news? Well, some of them got hurt and there are no Veterinarians available to treat them.  Our guest today, German Writer, Heike Hagenguth has just been evacuated from her home of choice for over 10 years, in Egypt - without her pets. I"ll ask her about shortages and shelters, pets abandoned and the zoo   Deborah fills in details about experiences with pet rescue in Israel nearby a couple of decades earlier when dogs who resembled WWII German dogs were frequently  poisoned.  Religion, culture, what it is like to be a western woman working and living in Egypt is all part of this great interview.

“Heike says that Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals has taken over feeding Giza zoo animals and the “Society for Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt” is legitimate. Brooke Hospital takes care of horses and donkeys. Please spread the word!’ Dear Friends, many of you have asked how they can be of help. Animal rescue organizations in Egypt have a difficult time to collect donations from within Egypt at the moment. This is due to banks not working, a mainly cash based system and people having other concerns at the moment. Thousands of pets are suffering in pet shops that are closed. Horses and camels were used and got injured during demonstrations in Tahrir SQ yesterday. Organizations are asking for help from international donators. ESMA www.esmaegypt.org is feeding the animals in Giza zoo as nobody else is attending to them. Also SPARE www.sparelives.org and EMRO www.emaurescue.org are respectable organizations that need help. Brooke Hospital www.thebrooke.org takes care of horses and donkeys. I am sure there are others, but these are the ones that I know and trust. Please spread the word!  Heike”

Next time Heike will talk on-air with us she will be live from Egypt hopefully with her cats and dog safely by her side.

Deborah begins with a sad news story about 100 tourist friendly sled dogs slaughtered, and a reminder to be vigilant when Olympics and other huge money making events come to your town.  Plus two stories of dogs outsmarting humans and why Deborah tells you never to try to outrun or outfight a police dog.  Hear what its like to be taken down hard by an RCMP dog.  Callers with dog and cat problems are always welcome on live shows. Please email deborah at www.deborahwolfeonline.com if you would like to ask a question or make a comment.  Join the new Wolfe Pack subscription to get free pet radio, blogs, news and coupons for your pets. Mike from Michigan calls to talk about hamsters and genetically modified foods with no labels.  He asks Deborah to comment on whether dogs in other countries live longer due to diet.  Deborah compares the lifespan and diet of dogs in N.America from a few generations back to now and the results may send you back to the kitchen. Did you know cornstarch is a great grooming aid?  And onion should be part of every camping trip first aid kit? Listen to this show to find out what to pack for your pets in case of emergencies, plus hear about Rodan the stork and his undying love. Dog and Cat Haikus are sprinkled throughout this show, here and there for pet lovers to giggle.

Deborah begins by asking you to take sides in a battle between two families over the ownership of a dog. Then she updates you on the latest fear mongering news that warns people not to sleep with pets putting it into perspective with the true risks and benefits.  Do you know which animal Leo DiCaprio gave 1M of his own money to support?  Today’s guest, Adrian Nelson joins us from the Fur-Bearer Defenders to tell us about the dog and cat for fur trade and how you may be wearing a garment made from someone else’s stolen pet. We also talk about hunting vs. trapping, public safety vs. animal rights,  sustenance vs. fur, seals and how the seal hunt keeps the Canadian border open to dog and cat fur from China.   Is the native right to hunt part of the equation?  Adrian explains that accounts for 2% of the fur trade, but non Native trappers want you to think its part of the argument.  It’s a complex problem that we dissect together so you can shop smart and put pressure on in your local area to stop trapping.

www.FurBearerDefenders.com to learn more and watch under cover surveillance video of a dog and cat fur farm shot in China by the H.S.U.S. (Deborah is recommending only adults watch this video; no kids please; it is very graphic and disturbing, but worth watching if you can handle it as an adult.)  At home, in Canada and America, beavers, skunks, squirrels and every kind of furry animal you can think of is being trapped and killed and used for fur in this wasteful unkind industry.  Listen to the show so you won’t make the easy mistake of supporting that industry by accident.

Greta Beigel,  ‘Mewsings: My Life as a Jewish Cat’

Deborah asks you would you rather kiss your favorite celeb like Angelina Jolie or her husband Brad Pitt to welcome the New Year or your pets?  Author and musician, writer and traveller, Greta Beigel joins us to talk about her book which shows us the Jewish  holidays from a cat’s perspective.  The book is done in gentle rhyme making it ideal for children ages 8+ to read themselves or read aloud to kids younger.  Together Greta and Deborah discuss how Jewish pet owners pamper and spoil, overprotect and otherwise treat their pets like their own Jewish offspring.  Are mice kosher?  Do cats have cat mitzvahs?  Do Jewish cats see the doctor more than non Jewish cats?    Greta reads from the Chanukah story and discusses her travels around the world as an invited cat sitter to friends in Iceland, Hawaii, New Zealand and now after sunny L.A. she finds herself, the ever wandering Jew, taking trips from her base in rainy Portland.  These two Jewish pet moms chat and kibbitz (joke) about cats around the world and Jewish pet owners and pets in a world wide conversation that includes a Seder with the Governor of Hawaii.  Deborah also mentions her own struggles recently with Thump the Rottweiler, king of camp good dog.  We thought his wrist (front leg) was sprained or broken from a fall in snow, but the xrays showed it was gone from cancer along with other parts too. When is it time to euthanize a good dog?  www.rainbowsbridge.com gives Deborah comfort that she’ll meet up with all her pets and the animals she’s known and cared for one day with them all in perfect health at that bridge.  Check out the youtube clips of King Thump wrestling with a giant poodle. Poodle vs. Rottweiler – I think you can guess who won.  If you love Rottweilers than you probably know they aren’t the brightest bulbs in the box, but watch Thump open a latch like a genius border collie in seconds.  www.campgooddog.com is where you’ll find the link to ‘DOGS GONE WILD!’, (camp good dog ) or just look it up on youtube and you’ll see the great  giant, bucked tooth , oversized  Thump in his prime.  The dogs of camp good dog howled in unison when Thump passed and Deborah tells you about two other pack howls that demonstrate dogs know when life passes and dogs feel loss deeply. Thump we miss you -gentle giant.  Winner of all tug of wars.  California born snow-lover, racoon hater, Guardian of tiny rescue kittens and puppies.  Security Expert. Snoring, moaning, bum wiggling, stinky, big headed Rottie who always watched our back, we miss you!

Check out Deborah Wolfe, Pet Expert on Facebook to see Thump and read more about this rags to riches story; from unwanted throw away dog on the run to King of Camp Good Dog, a dog’s story.

PET SAFETY DURING DISASTERS

This show includes an interview with the California Region 1 Coordinator for Noah’s Wish, the organization that goes into disaster zones when everyone else is leaving to rescue the animals left behind. First, Deborah talks about stranger danger and how parent’s lessons on dog safety can make kids talk to grown ups who mean them harm .  One horribly tragic example is now in the news due to the publication band being released and Deborah tries to help you understand how a child’s love of dogs led to her death and how you can prevent it with your own kids.  Forests are burning in Israel; is a tree in Israel worth the same as a tree in Canada?   Santa likes one kind of pet more than the others. Can you guess who gets more gifts- dogs or cats?  Today’s guest, Charlie Crosby from www.noahswish.org joins Deborah to talk about deployment in emergencies like Katrina and the California and Okanagan forest fires and what that’s like as an animal rescuer.  You can  join Noah’s Wish when the training is available in your area and get trained  in pet first aid and disaster relief so you can go to the disaster and make a difference hands-on with animals. Right now Charlie’s watching the flooding in Seattle to see if she’ll be deployed while much of the U.S is struggling with snow and 300 people are stranded in Ontario on a highway and the Canadian Army is their only hope if they can’t reach a ‘warming station’.  Deborah gives safety tips for cold weather driving and for pets and Charlie tells you what to do in emergencies.  This season be good to your animals with time, play, attention and grooming (not just food).  Anchor the tree, fill it with water, decorate with non toxic, non breakable ornaments and no food items at all.  Make your house ribbon, tinsel and lilly free for the sake of your cats and don’t binge that dog on turkey gravy.  Deborah reminds us that most cats visit the ER on Christmas Day for ingesting wrapping and most dogs go there for eating too much fat . Most often  only surgery can save them.   Happy Safe Holidays to you and your pets.

Vladislav Roytapel, the Russian Dog Wizard (www.socaldogtraining.com) joins Deborah to help listeners with a lab who chases shadows, and other training problems. First Deborah solves a couple of cat problem emails giving advice for shy /aloof cats that will help people get them to accept new people.  Vladislav comes from a background training dogs for the KGB and uses more severe correction when training dogs compared to Deborah who prefers time-outs and denial of reward instead of collars that pinch.  Hear them debate the merits of the two different style of dog training and cover the common ground they have when it comes to dog body language, and voice.  Vladae talks about a man who was bringing new girl friends to bed with his aggressive akita and the girls were ending up in emerg.  Deborah ends the show with Holiday Pet Safety tips.  Keep those burning candles supervised and away from pets for a happy Chanukah.  More holiday tips next week when Charlie Crosby tells us all about Noah’s Wish and the animals they rescue from fire, flood and hurricane.
