You are invited to go to www.allliephillips.com for a free download on how to train your pet for therapy.  After a law career in Michigan defending animal rights issues and educating other legal professionals, Allie now directs her attention to her two pet projects; PAWS  which works at providing space for family pets in shelters for abused women and TASK which works to integrate pet comfort dogs into  child abuse situations. There is a huge connection between abuse of animals and children and Allie explains the interplay.  Check out www.leapingbunny.org and look for their label to see if products you use really are free of animal testing that may involve pets seized from shelters. Allie  Phillips explains how teaching kids to behave and think kindly toward animals is the big picture solution to the problems she fights.

Do you know which Founding Father had the most pets?  Politicians and their choice of pet ; do you think they picked pets just like themselves or did they pick their opposite? Obama and his Portuguese water dog or Clinton and his cat; are they opposites or alike? What about the Bushes or Churchill? Deborah tells us a story about Gerald Ford in his bathrobe that makes him a good guy as a pet owner regardless of your politics.  Abuse of animals and children and family violence is interconnected in alarming ways.  Deborah supplies some statistics and advice from the A.S.P.C.A and H.S.U.S. while interviewing Marci Kladnik from Alley Cat Rescue and Catalyst for cats.( Check out the archived show for 05/04/10  to hear more about managing wild cats in our cities.)  Marci has the on  the scenes knowledge from her in the trenches, under the stairs and behind the back alley cat rescue work in California with managed stray populations and she has seen first hand dogs, horses and cats neglected and abused by both adults and kids/teens.  Did you know that in 68% of the battered women cases in Wisconsin, pets were also abused and 75% of the time the cruelty to the animals occurred in front of the children.  Pet abuse goes hand in hand with family abuse and can be used as a powerful tool by the abuser against the weaker members of the family.  Together Deborah and Marci tell you how you can keep your family and neighborhood safe from this plague.

Stray dog saves woman & child, What kind of Dog is ‘Doji’ the Quaid’s Hollywood refugee dog?  Snow geese don’t want to leave because efforts to keep them off the airport are irresistible.  Janine Starink joins Deborah to talk about Schnauzers and other dogs. Discussion gets heated when they talk about cropping and docking which Janine believes are procedures that pet owners ought to have freedom of choice to access through Veterinarians who want to perform those services.  Deborah points out that many Veterinarians do not want to perform these surgeries and need their associations to stand behind them so they don’t offend customers and breed clubs with their choice.    Deborah believes cropping and docking are unnecessary cosmetic surgeries (like foot binding & cosmetic ear pinning in human girls) and argues that although some individual animals may need these surgeries( if their unaltered tails and ears prove to be problems) that this is the only way out of breeding such dogs.  Then the dogs who have natural tails and ears which are healthy and effective will be bred thereby eliminating the need for those surgeries in the breed.  Janine argues on the one hand that these procedures are innocuous like braces  and then on the other that they are medically necessary for certain breeds which now  have tails and ears with interfere with hygiene and good health.  She claims that all dogs will look to same if this anti cropping, docking legislation is widespread and that without ear cropping dogs don’t look as menacing making them less effective deterrents.  Deborah counters that  a dog can easily be trained to growl and bark on command making whether the ear is upright and pointy irrelevant to a would be attacker plus she explains that her own long tailed standard poodle does not look like other dogs and eventually if all standard poodles had long tails and weren’t surgically altered all would like her, and her tail is gorgeous.  You can check out deborah wolfe’s  old blog on redroom.com to read more about this issue and see mama Raspberry the standard poodle with the undocked swirly tail in all its natural coquettish beauty.  Her  purebred litter of five pups born sept. 5, 2010 also have undocked tails unlike their dad who was docked before I got him from a breeder in Montana many years ago when pretty much all poodles were docked at two days of age. Now many sport beautiful long tails like the rottweilers Janine mentions.   Do you think the freedom to do what you want with your animals overrides the right of the animal not to have unnecessary surgery? What about the Veterinary Doctor – how can his/her rights be protected to practice the way they want without pressure on either side or should there be pressure?  Veterinarians who want to keep their license and insurance in the province of Nova Scotia can’t do these surgeries.  Is that the way to go?  Janine says no.  Listen to the show and you can make up your mind.

The attachment is so strong that it can result in pet ghosts coming back to say ‘good bye’ , play with or taunt other pets, or just visit special places like hotels.  You may be surprised to learn that you’ve had an experience that fits the pattern; you may have experienced a pet ghost yourself or you might in future and this show will tell you what  to look for so you won’t miss that moment.  Both Dusty and Deborah were sceptics to start but the amount of anecdotal testimony plus their own personal experiences which at first they dismissed have led them to surrender to the fact that ghost pets exist.  Dusty tells some cat and horse ghost stories from her collection and Deborah mentions her own which were discussed more in depth on last year’s Halloween ghost show.    If you like this show and want more, please listen to the show we did together for prn in 2009 archived at Halloween time.  If you’ve got a ghost pet story of your own email Dusty Rainbolt and your ghost story might make it into the next book.  Next week Deborah will share a funny and true story about a cat and a hot tub.

Deborah gives you some news bits and pieces first about a dog attack and safety with kids and dogs and  a trivia question only ‘Twilight’ fans can solve. How often do people get rabies from cats? The answer will surprise you! Then the news takes us off into the world of cats; feral, hoarded, and rescued. Louise Holton, founder of Alley Cat Rescue, helped bring Trap, Neuter, and Release (TNR) ideology and methodology to America from England and S.Africa by starting Alley Cat Rescue. Louise and Deborah discuss the facts of feral cat management from the in the trenches wounds to the facts about why feral cats are good for nature and why TNR is good for them. Why are so many cats in the shelter system and feral? Partly because we don’t i.d. our cats properly explains Deborah while she gives you the stats on how few cats are returned to their families compared to dogs (8X less) and that’s partly because almost  no cats found by shelters have any i.d.

Spay and Neuter is another big part of the picture and Alley Cat Rescue helps to make reproduction control (kitty control) affordable. Louise describes the heroics behind a trip to Mexico where she helped alter 100 cats and watched as American Veterinarians taught their Mexican colleagues to perform the surgeries which they’d never learned in school. Nicely Done Louise and thank you!  www.saveacat.org is where to go for more information about Alley Cat Rescue and their teams of Associates all over the world.

Deborah begins with the dog take on the Israel-Turkey boat situation plus a comment on fearmongering and h1n1 in the news yet again. Then we go walking on the cat side for most of this show asking first, do good cats really wear black? Deborah explains the plight of black dogs in shelters and that plus the bad luck myth gives black cats bad chances when homeless. Annie Bruce, author of ‘Cat Be Good’ (now available free on line), joins us to answer your behavior calls and emails to solve a curtain climbing cat and an eight year old Persian who won’t or can’t use the litter box for urine. Annie explains how declawing plays a role in every training answer she gives. A cat who is declawed is given a huge painful handicap that effects all he does from then on and causes many behaviour problems especially with the litter box, explains Annie who also suggests you switch foods often to feed your cat a varied diet. Deborah first tells you about animals and empathy, sympathy, kindness and cooperation; how we as humans tend to test them for other abilities like deceit and competitiveness and miss out on their gentler attributes as packs and herds. Deborah explains Stanley Coren’s  take that humans with dogs outlasted all other primate-man types that did not have dogs and that we are symbiotic with canines.

Next there are some strange sitings in the news from whales in the Mediterranean to unidentified ‘Montauk Monster’ found in New York and now Ontario. Sable island home of wild horses became a protected heritage site the same week horse abuses at three plants were exposed by the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition which snuck a camera into three plants and caught horrors of abuse. Barry Dunner, Director of Development & Communications for BC Guide Dog Services joins us for half the show to talk about the new branch of service dogs; autism support dogs for kids.  Did you know they actually stop kids from scratching themselves, rocking into things and running away?  Find out what makes these dogs different or not so different from your average Lab or Golden and find out how they are trained. Barry describes his own blindfolded walk when he had trust a guide dog to lead him through traffic. A dog can mean the difference between a lonely almost shut-in life and a completely active independent working life easily making the cost of a dog a no-brainer as it is repayed ten fold. Sight impaired elderly people with no dogs end up in nursing homes three years earlier and the cost of a home for one year more than pays off the cost of training a dog which then works for years. Why is a guide dog better than a passerby when a blind person wants to cross  a downtown street? Barry gives us a real live example from just weeks ago. Check out www.bcguidedog.com to see beautiful photos of service dogs with their happy independent partners and find out more about how you can get involved.

Deborah tells you about some of her experiences with wild dolphins, and a red tide afflicted cormorant sea bird in the Gulf of Mexico as we all think about the oil spill. ‘At the very least, why don’t they make the tanker with the sucker tank stand by 24/7 the way every business must have a fire extinguisher? Months for the only equipment that will work to arrive is ridiculously short sighted thinking based on the idea that man-made things don’t break. Home tips from Deborah for cat and dog mattes, and communicating with your pets. What do you get when you cross a polar bear with a grizzly (besides a pretty scary nightmare or camping experience)? You actually do get a hybrid bear. Coyotes and bounties and why they don’t work plus Marci Kladnik from www.catalystforcats.org joins us to talk about her hands on work with trapping, neutering and releasing wild feral cats in Santa Barbara California. In Marci’s world cat math means 1+3 can = 20. Marci and Deborah explain why TNR works best at population control for the cats, rats and even the birds. For our 'how to' trick of the day, Marci shows you how to call kittens by making a warbling/cooing sound she demonstrates. What works for momma cat works for Marci and it’ll work for you. Vaccination protocol for trapped cats was described by the guest with one mistake that she wants to correct; Trap, Neuter, Release Feral cats are given distemper vaccine but not feline leukemia vaccine as was mistakenly stated in the live broadcast.

Deborah begins the show with some information about egg and chicken consumption and why free range really is best; then she describes a chicken rescue which began when 30 or so chickens bound for slaughter after a year of forced egg production(up to 5 per day when they are still immature and should not yet be producing any).  These birds lucky for them avoided slaughter and ended up at camp good dog to live out there lives with true free range habitat and diet (bugs and all).  They had there first taste of sunshine and standing outdoors on Sunday when they chose to leave the coop and flock to the sunny spots – Deborah is happily surprised at how quickly they are adapting to real life after factory life and no stimulation, no freedom even to move for so long.   Did you know that ‘organic’ milk and meat can right now come from cows that have never seen grass?  Shocking but true and the aspca is trying to make sure that changes so check out www.aspca.com to sign on.

Tim Link, author of Wagging Tales does readings of animals for listeners and for host Deborah Wolfe.
