Guest: Professor Charlene Spretnak

Professor Charlene Spretnak is an internationally recognized author and was among the first wave of women originators behind what is now called “eco-feminism”.  Her writings have focused on such diverse, but interrelated topics, as social justice, ecological philosophy and Green politics, feminism and spirituality and religion.  The British government’s Department of the Environment named her among the one hundred eco-heroes of all time. Charlene is currently a professor of women’s spirituality at the California Institute for Integral Studies, a research fellow at the Green Institute and an adjunct professor at Schumacher College in the UK, founded by the gandhian scholar and mystic Satish Kumar who has been a guest on this program.
 
Charlene has published books as wide ranging as the goddesses of the Greeks, the role of the feminine in Christianity, social and historical criticism of modern culture, and environmental and green philosophy.  Her most recent book is “Relational Reality: New Discoveries of Interrelatedness that are Transforming the Modern World” which challenges the older mechanistic view of the universe and society that continues to dominate our major dominant institutions.

Guest: Conrad LeBeau


 

Conrad LeBeau is a self-educated investigative health author  and a developer of supplement products for a company he founded Vital Health Prodcuts.  He is founder of Keep Hope Alive, a non profit education organization, Vital Health Publications and the Journal of Immunity.  He has written extensively on alternative ways to improve immune system, natural ways to improve gastro-intestinal health and the health risks of cell phone towers.

In 2008 and 2009, after using peer reviewed medical research obtained from the National Library of Medicine to provide scientific support for certain of his products, Conrad was targeted by the FDA for special attention and investigation.  He was forced to close down Vital Health Products as a business and later discovered the DFA has planted spyware on his website to tack changes.

In December 2010, hew as indicted for a misdemeanor by a US attorney under FDA pressure for 4 health products that had been sold to undercover FDA agents in 2009.

Since then, Conrad has performed extensive research into the FDA rulings and their operations, future pending bills, and is prepared to fight the FDA on the charges in court about how the FDA interprets and enforces the Food and Drug Act, the freedom and right to share and use information from the US National Library of Medicine, the FDA GMPs for dietary supplements that will eventually force 1000s of small dietary companies out of business and the FDA’s abuse of power.

Prof. Philip Jenkins is the Edwin Earl Sparks Professor of History and Religious Studies at Pennsylvania State University and a distinguished senior fellow of the Institute for Studies in Religion at Baylor University.  In the past he held a full professor in Criminal Justice and American Studies at Penn State. 
 
Prof. Jenkins is highly regarded as a leading experts in global Christianity and the emergence of new religious movements. His many publications, books and articles address issues of crime and justice, the crisis of sexual crime within churches, new religious cults, and the large variety of Christianities that have existed during the course of history.
 
His most recent book is “Laying Down the Sword: Why We Can’t Ignore the Bible’s Violent Verses”  which looks some of the most violent texts in the scriptures of Jews, Christians and Muslims and presents the many ways, pro and con, that religious people have dealt with them.

Guest: Diana Beresford-Kroeger

Diana Beresford-Kroeger is an Irish-Canadian researcher, scientist and nature mystic who perhaps knows more about trees and forests than anyone in North America. She is an expert botanist  and medical biochemist who has written extensively on the molecular biology of trees, their medicinal properties, the social interactions between trees and other life forms in our forests, sustainable forestry, and the traditional wisdom trees hold for healing.  Her scientific work has appeared in The American Heart Journal and the Journal of Microscopy.  In past she has held science posts at the Canadian Department of Agriculture and the University of Ottawa School of Medicine.

Diana’s own research gardens outside Ottawa, open to the public, include rare plants from Turkey, Iran, China, and a hundred rare types of trees from the northern forests and other countries, many that are endangered.
Her recent book, “The Global Forest: Forty Ways that Trees Can Save Us”, shares 40 short essays that our frequent guest Bill McKibben says reflects someone who understands a subject so deeply that information is transmuted to wisdom.  After reading The Global Forest, you will never look upon a tree in our usual impersonal way ever again.

Rocky is the former two-term mayor of Salt Lake City, serving from 2000 to 2008. He is the executive director of organization High Road for Human Rights.  Prior he practiced law in Utah for 21 years and was listed in Best Lawyers in America.  A former member of the Democratic Party, he left ver its evisceration of the Constitution and it having morphed as a flip side of the GOP.
 
Among his achievements and positions, which will have a chance to explore more thoroughly are:
  • Listed by Business Week as one of the top 20 activists in th world on climate change and has received many awards from various environmental organizations
  • Recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as one of the top 10 advocates for GLPT equality
  • A leading opponent of invasion of Iraq and the only US mayor who advocated for the impeachment of George Bush
  • As mayor of Salt Lake City he succeeded in reducing incarceration of those convicted for minor crimes such as drug possession and rather created restorative justice programs that earned him his second World Leadership Award.

Journalist, investigative reporter Nick Bryant has been writing on the plight of disadvantaged children for over a decade. His writings have appeared in professional publications such as the Journal of Professional Ethics, the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, the Journal of Social Distress and the publication of School Health. He is the co-author of America’s Children:  Triumph of Tragedy” dealt with the mental health problems of lower socioeconomic children.

His very disturbing book is “The Franklin Scandal: A Story of Powerbrokers, Child Abuse and Betrayal” that exposes a nationwide pedophile ring that pandered children to a cabal of the rich and powerful and the corruption of the Justice Department and law enforcement to crack down on it. Guests: James Galbraith, Les Leopold, and Marshall Auerback

Professor James Galbraith is a distinguished professor and Chair of Government and Business Relations at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin.  He is the son of renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith. James is the Chair of the international organization Economists for Peace and Security and a Senior Scholar of the Levy Economics Institute.  In the early 80s, he served on the Congressional staff as the Executive Director of the Joint Economic Committee. 
 
Prof. Galbraith has written many critical and controversial books challenging the nation’s predominant economic policy legislation and the paradigm from which it is based.  His latest book is, “The Predatory State: How Conservatives Abandoned the Free Market and Why Liberals Should Too” which targets the liberal economic policies being espoused by both parties for being bankrupt in theory and principle.

Les Leopold is the co-founder and director of two nonprofit educational organizations: The Labor Institute and the Public Health Institute. He also helped to create the Blue-Green Alliance, and organization that merges labor unions with environmental concerns, such as the Sierra Club. 
 
Ralph Nader listed Les’s award-winning book, “The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor” on his recommended top 10 read list.  His recent book, “The Looting of America: How Wall Street’s Game of Fantasy Finance Destroyed our Jobs, Pensions and Prosperity” is perhaps the single best introduction for anyone who wishes to fully understand the main issues and economic jargon about our economic collapse.

Marshall Auerback is a Fellow at the Economists for Peace and Security, a global strategist for the investment group Madison Street Partners in Denver and a Research Associate at the Levy Institute.  He has a wide range of expertise in the global investment arena, having covered the stock market for a decade along the Pacific rim and Southeat Asia and formerly ran the Asian-Pacific hedge fund for the Tiedemann Investment Group in New York.  Earlier Marshall has also covered investments in Russia, the former Soviet Republics and Africa.   He writes for Naked Capitalism, the Huffington Post, Truthout and many business and investment publications. Marshall has a magna cum laude degree from Queens University and a law degree from Oxford.

Professor Andrew Kolin is professor of political science at Hilbert College in Hamburg, New York, where he specializes in American political thought, civil liberties, US foreign policy, and constitutional law. Much of his recent work has focused on the conflicts between state power and democracy and the history of the US turning into a police state.
 
His latest book published this year is “State Power and Democracy: Before and During the Presidency of George W Bush” which traces the history of American politics for sowing the seeds for a national police state from the founding of the republic to the present.

Steve Lendman is an independent , progressive economist and investigative writer who consistently tackles the most critical issues in the world as soon as they emerge.  He degrees from Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and has worked as a marketing research analyst for several large US corporations before focusing his attention on small business enterprises, progressive nonprofit organizations and economic and political research on finance, war and peace issues, social equity and the humanitarian crises among Palestinians and Haitians.

Steve just recently received the International Journalist award from the prestigious Club of Mexico. He is the author of the recent publication, “How Wall Street Fleeces America: Privatized Banking, Government Collusion and Class War”, and hosts The Lendman News Hour heard on the Progressive Radio Network every Thursday at 11 AM and every Saturday and Sunday at 1 PM.

Shaheed Buttar is the executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and the People’s Campaign for the Constitution which aims to defend civil liberties, constitutional rights and the rules of law threatened by the war on terror.  Shahid has a JD from Stanford Law School and formerly the chief editor of the Stanford Environmental Law Journal.
 
Shaheed also serves on the advisory bodies of the national Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms, the national Campaign to Restore Civil Rights and the South Asian Americans Leading Together organizations.  His articles appear in the New York Times, al-Jazeera, and Truthout.

Guest: Rabbi Michael Lerner

Rabbi Michael Lerner is clearly one the nation’s greatest Jewish intellectuals and spiritual political activists. As a teenager, Rabbi Lerner was a student of Abraham Joshua Heschel, a great socially responsible mystical thinker who marched with Martin Luther King.
 
During the 60s, he was a chair of the Berkeley chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society and briefly incarcerated among the Seattle Seven while teaching at the University of Washington,. He also has the honor of having been called by J Edgar Hoover as “one of the most dangerous criminals in America.”
 
Michael is currently the editor of Tikkun Magazine—an award winning journal of interfaith and progressive critiques on American culture, politics, and religion—and is the founder of the Network of Spiritual Progressives. His most recent book just released before the Hannukah holiday is “Embracing Israel/Palestine: A Strategy to Heal and Transform the Middle East” which is being praised by people like Jimmy Carter, Uri Avnery who is a frequent guest on this program, Desmond Tutu, Senator Keith Ellison and others as the most insightful treatment and understanding of the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a roadmap for bringing peace to the region.

Guest: Dr. James Lawrence Powell


Dr. James Lawrence Powell is the present executive director of the National Physical Science Consortium – a partnership between government, educational institutes and private industry  to increase the education of students in the physical sciences.  With a doctorate in Geochemistry from MIT, Dr. Powell has been a professor and has served as the former presidents of Oberlin, Franklin Marshall and Reed colleges.  Over the years he has authored books on the earth sciences and climate change.   His past work in education in the scientific field has earned him appointments by both Presidents Regan and the first Bush to the National Science Board.
 
James recent book is “The Inquisition of Climate Science” which deconstructs the pseudo science behind climate change deniers and exposes the large network of think thanks, politicians and private industries to try to influence the public and legislators into believing humans are not the cause for the global warming catastrophes ahead.

Guests: Kevin Annett and Dee Nicholson


Kevin Annett is a former minister of the United Church of Canada, who was defrocked for his pursuing investigations and research into the holocaust of native American children – which has become better known as Canada’s genocide.  His publications which include “Hidden From History: The Canadian Holocause” and later “Love and Death in the Valley” have created much of storm in the Anglican Church.  So much he was denied entry into England in May of this year, being held briefly in an immigration prison before being deported.
 
Kevin’s remarkable, well-documented research was the theme of his documentary film “Unrepentant: Kevin Annett and Canada’s Genoscide” – which earned him Best Director award at the 2006 New York International Independent Film Festival.

Dee Nicholson is the Executive Director of the National Health Federation of Canada – the world’s oldest health freedom organization and the sole health freedom organization represented on the Codex Alimentarius commission.  She has been public relations consultant and a seasoned activist for many years both in the US and Canada. 
 
Because the Canadian health care system treats Native Americans differently than non-Indians  -- for example, mandatory flu vaccinations on reservations – Dee’s organization is leader in lobbying for Native American health rights.
