William Arkin is a political columnist and journalist for the Washington Post, which has been associated with for over a dozen years.  As an expert in military policies and national security he has advised the United Nations and the US Air Force, as well as non profit organizations.  In the past he has served in the Army Intelligence community. He has worked with the institute for Policy Sutdies, Greenpeace, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Human Rights Watch, in addition to serving as a military analyst for major media outlets such as NBC News.

Dr. William deBuys is an environmental journalist and conservationist living on a farm in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico. His books have been widely acclaimed and have received many awards including the NY Times Notable Book of the year, a finalist for the Pulitzer in Non Fiction, the Pushcart Award and others. 

William has been involved in environmental affairs for almost 3 decades, having been the director of the North Carolina Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and representative of  the Conservation Fund in the Southwes. His conservation work in New Mexico earned him an award from the US Forest Service and he was appointed by President Clinton to serve as the founder of the trust overseeing the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

William’s recent book is “A Great Aridness: Climate Change and the Future of the American Southwest” which took over 3 years of indepth research to reveal the American southwest as becoming one of the most endangered water-deprived regions in the history of civilization.

Harvey Wasserman is a journalist, author and democracy activist who has been a leading national voice in the anti-war and anti-nuclear energy movements for 3 decades.  He is a senior advisor for Greenpeace USA and the Nuclear Information and Resource Service.

In 1973, Harvey pioneered the global movement against atomic reactors and is responsible for coining the term “No Nukes.”

Among his many books are the “Killing Our Own: The Disaster of America’s Epxerience with Atomic Radiation”,  and  “Harvey Wasserman’s History of the United States” which Howard Zinn forwarded, and most recently  “Solartopia: Our Green-Powered Earth AD 2030”

Harvey will be hosts a new program on the Progressive Radio Network Green Power and Wellness Hour – Every Tuesday afternoon starting at 2:00 pm

Christopher Anders is the senior legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union out of their Washington DC office and the organization’s leading representative for lobbying Congress on issues such as conflicts between civil and religious rights, housing, hate crimes and lesbian and gay rights.  In the past he has led the efforts to stop the Federal Marriage Amendment and the Marriage Protection Act as well as develop bills to provide legal protections to same sex couples. 

Chris currently leading efforts on the Hill to oppose the passage of sections to the Defense Authorization Bill in the Senate, to be voted tomorrow, that would extend the US into a warzone and thereby expand military powers to detain and imprison Americas indefinitely and without charge.

Guest: Jesse Ventura

 

We have as our guest today one of the nation’s more colorful political and social voices in the progressive community – Jesse Ventura.   He was a Navy Seal during the latter phase of the Vietnam War, followed by a career in professional wrestling in the World Wrestling Federation and then a sportscaster. In the early 1990s, Jesse began his political career, first as mayor of Brooklyn Park in Minnesota and later being elected as the governor of the state on the independent Reform Party ticket from 1998 to 2002.  Jesse has been an ardent supporter of Main Street Americans – when his state of Minnesota ran a budget surplus, he provided a sales tax rebate since the money belonged to the public.  He has been a proponent for gay rights, women’s rights, opposition to trade sanctions and a leading critic of federal policies leading America into morphing into a police surveillance state. 

 

Jesse’s most recent book is  “63 Documents the Government Doesn’t’ Want you to Read” and his book “American Conspiracies” was released in paperback this year.

Professor Lawrence Lessig is the Director of the Edmond Safra Foundation for Ethics at Harvard University and a professor of law at the Harvard Law School. In the past he has been on the faculties of Stanford’s and the University of Chicago’s law schools, and clerked for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and for Justice Scalia on the US Supreme Court.  Prof. Lessig has specialized in law and technology and now more diligently on institutional corruption in government and particularly Congress and how this has weakened democracy.

He has won numerous awards and was named by Scientific America as one of our top 50 visionaries. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society and serves on the boards of many organizations.

His most recent book just released is “Republic Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress and a Plan to Stop It” which looks at the fundamental systemic problem in our political system which has permitted corruption to thrive and disempower the American people.

Guest:  Dr. Andrew Wakefield

Dr. Andrew Wakefield is an academic gastroenterologist specializing in inflammatory bowel disease and the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine or MMR. He is a former Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and has published over 130 original scientific papers and book chapters.

In 1998, he and his colleagues at the Royal Free Hospital in London reported a novel inflammatory bowel disease in children with developmental disorders such as autism.  Dr. Wakefield resisted pressure to stop his investigations into a possible link between vaccinations, intestinal inflammation and autism.  He left the Hospital in 2001 to further pursue his research into neurological injury to children and its possible relationship to environmental  causes. In 2001 he was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and is a medical advisor to the British charity Visceral  and a board member of the American charity Medical Interventions for Autism.  He is also the author of Callous Disregard: Autism and Vaccines, The Truth Behind the Tragedy.
