Guest: Fawaz Gerges



Prof. Fawaz Gerges is a Professor of Middle Eastern Politics and International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He also holds the Emirates Chair of the Contemporary Middle East and is the Director of the Middle East Centre at his university. He has also taught at Oxford, Harvard, Columbia and Princeton universities. Prof. Gerges is internationally recognized as an expert in social movements in the Islamic nations, the sociology and politics of jihadist organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda, the Arab-Israeli conflict and American and European foreign relations with the Middle East. His research on al-Qaeda are regarded by many as the most informed in print.  His latest book “The Rise and Fall of al-Qaeda” is particularly important for challenging the reliability of the US government’s and major media’s propagandized threats of a viable terrorist organization that we come to know as al-Qaeda. 

Prof. Gerges has written for many publications including the NY Times, Christian Science Monitor, The Guardian and Independent in the UK, and many peer reviewed journals. And frequently many media outlets, which have included BBC, NPR, Bill Moyers, Jim Lehrer and others.

Dr. Justin Frank MD is a psychoanalyst practicing in  Washington DC and a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at George Washington University Medical Center.  Trained at Harvard Medical School, he has practiced for over 30 years and is also the co-Director of the Metropolitan Center for Object Relations in NYC.

His book “Bush on the Couch” was a best seller and detailed the psychological rationale for confirming President Bush was a president of poor mental health, unsuited for the office.

His very recent book, “Obama on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President” promises to do same in explaining the inconsistencies and weaknesses of President Obama and the reasons why Obama the Campaigner seems to be so distinct from Obama the President.

Harriet Washington is one of America’s most important medical journalists and bioethicists today, investigating some of the darker recesses of American medicine and experimentation. She has been a fellow of ethics at Harvard Medical School and its School of Public health, a Knight fellow at Stanford University, a senior researcher at the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University and a visiting scholar at the DePaul University College of Law. 

Harriet published her critically acclaimed book “Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present” in 2007. It received many major awards including the National Book Critic’s Circle Award and was named one of the Best Books by Publisher’s Weekly.

Her most recent book is “Deadly Monopolies: The Shocking Corproate Takeover of Life Itself and the Consequences for Your Health and our Medical Future” – which promises to be the most thorough, comprehensive text on corporate manipulation and ownership of medical science solely for profit.

Dan McKanan is the Ralph Waldo Emerson Unitarian Universalist Association Senior Lecturer at Harvard Divinity School, where he specializes in the American history of religious and spiritual movements for social transformation. Before coming to Harvard, he served as department chair and associate professor of theology at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University, where he began teaching in 1998. He has written on the theological understandings of violence and nonviolence among pacifists and radical activists and Catholic social activism.

Dan’s most recent book is Prophetic Encounters: Religion and the American Radical Tradition, from Beacon Press, that provides an all-encompassing history of American religious activism for social transformation.

Dr. Brian Hooker is a Professor of Biology in Northern California and the Washington State representative for the Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs, a national non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of mercury in all mercury-containing medical products, including vaccines.  Dr. Hooker was instrumental and the lead submitter for the organization’s Freedom of Information request to gain access to the Centers of Disease Control’s documents which exposed CDC’s participation in the funding and execution of the famous Danish study negating a vaccine-autism relationship that has since become a scandal of corruption and fraud.  (www.Merury-FreeDrugs.org

Dr. Meryl Nass is a board certified physician in Internal Medicine practicing at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor Maine, where she also runs a clinic treating patients from Gulf War Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity conditions, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and other related disorders. She regarded as expert in biological warfare and bioterrorism, which she has investigated since 1989, and in 1992 was the one who identified the use of anthrax as a biological weapon in Rhodesia’s civil war in the late 1970s. Dr. Nass is a staunch opponent to the anthrax vaccine and was instrumental in the creation of a coalition to fight the Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program.  Since 1999, she has testified to four Congressional Committees about anthrax, the anthrax vaccine and biological warfare.

Colin has written several books, and his latest is “American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America.”

Peter Phillips is a professor of Sociology at Sonoma State University in California where he teaches courses in political sociology, media censorship, and the sociology of power and the media. He is the former founding director of Project Censored, an internationally known research program and watch organization that annually identifies the “Most Censored” news stories not appearing in mainstream media

Prof. Phillips has written many oped investigative pieces for news soures such as Counterpunch, Common Dreams, Social Policy, Free Inquiry and others, and appears frequently as a guest on TV shows such as Talk of the Nation, the World Radio Network and Jim Hightower’s program

Guest Professor Michael Kazin

Michael Kazin is a professor of history at Georgetown University in Washington DC, specializing in US social movement and the American Left.   He is also the co-editor of the magazine Dissent, founded in 1954 by Irving Howe as a home for thoughtful research for the democratic left.   Prior to his teaching at Georgetown, Professor Kazin was Chair of American Studies at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and taught at Stanford and the University of California.

He is the author of five books, and  his most recent publication – “American Dreamers: How the Left Changed the Nation” –traces the sweeping history of the leftist movements from its early roots in the 19th century to the present and the attempts by Americans to envision a “radically egalitarian transformation of society”
