Guest: Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank is an award winning historian, author, and columnist for Harper’s Magazine who is considered the great chronicler of American paradox.  He is the founder of the journal The Baffler and is well known for his analysis and insights into America’s cultural wars, electoral politics and pop culture, entertainment and advertizing.  Tom has a doctorate in history from the University of Chicago and he was featured in the BBC documentary “The Trap” and in the 2009 film “What’s the Matter with Kansas” which was based on his book by the same title.
 
His most recent book receiving wide attention in progressive circles is “Pity the Billionaire: The Hard Times Swindle and the Unlikely Comeback of the Right”  that takes a hard look at how it is that after the debacles of Republican politics, we can still find popular support for their regressive policies and corporate ideologies.

Guests: Ralph Nader and Rocky Anderson

Ralph Nader is without a second one of the most influential Americans during the past several decades.  He is directly responsible for many of our most important bills that have provided protection to consumers against the onslaughts of corporate short-term profits and Friedmanite free market, unregulated capitalism. Landmark acts for Freedom of Information, Clean Water, Clean Air, Whistleblower Protection, Pension Protection, Wholesome Food, and others have been enacted by Congress were implemented due to Ralph’s tireless efforts to speak for the welfare of American citizens. 
 
A graduate of Princeton and Harvard universities, Ralph has been a presidential candidate for five elections, building his platform on consumer rights, humanitarian and civil rights efforts, environmental sanity, and democratic government.
 
Ralph’s most recent book “Getting Steamed to Overcome Corporatism” targets many crimes being committed by corporate industries and government agenices that should steam us to take concerted action to protect democracy.
We have joining us for today’s broadcast Ross “Rocky” Anderson who announced his candidacy to the Presidency and the launch of a new national party – the Justice Party – at the end of November.
 
Rocky is the former two-term mayor of Salt Lake City, serving from 2000 to 2008. He is the executive director of organization High Road for Human Rights.  Prior he practiced law in Utah for 21 years and was listed in Best Lawyers in America.  A former member of the Democratic Party, he left ver its evisceration of the Constitution and it having morphed as a flip side of the GOP.
 
Among his achievements and positions, which will have a chance to explore more thoroughly are:

  • Listed by Business Week as one of the top 20 activists in th world on climate change and has received many awards from various environmental organizations
  • Recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as one of the top 10 advocates for GLPT equality
  • A leading opponent of invasion of Iraq and the only US mayor who advocated for the impeachment of George Bush
  • As mayor of Salt Lake City he succeeded in reducing incarceration of those convicted for minor crimes such as drug possession and rather created restorative justice programs that earned him his second World Leadership Award.

Cullen Murphy is the editor at large for Vanity Fair magazine, and the former managing editor of the Atlantic Monthly.  Some may remember the comic strip Prince Valiant—a series Cullen worked on with his father.
 
An expert scholar in the classics and medieval history, Cullen is the author of several books including “The Word According to Eve: Women and the Bible.”  He appeared on this program earlier to speak on the fall of the Roman Empire and how it informs us regarding the ultimate fate of America. 
 
Cullen has just released a new book:  “God’s Jury: The Inquisition and the Making of the Modern World” – an investigation into the psychology and methods of bureaucracy, power and persecution and how the legacy of the Inquisition continues to live with us today in recent American history.

Prof. Dennis Loo is a professor of sociology at California Polytech University in Pomona California.  He has degrees from Harvard and University of California, and has been active water rights issues, government corruption and globalization.  His articles appear on World Cant Wait.net where he serves on the steering committee, Counterpunch and Opednews. 
 
Dennis has received important progressive awards for his writing, including the Project Censored Award, The Nation Magazine’s Most Valuable Campaign Award and others.
 
His recent book, “Globalization and the Demolition of Society” which has been reviewed a hard hitting, powerful indictment of neoliberalism and its catastrophic effects on the essential fabric of society, equality and democracy.
Lewis Richmond is a Zen priest, meditation teacher and lineage holder who was ordained by the renowned Japanese Zen master Shun-roo Suzuki. Lew started his practice in 1967 and trained at Tassa-hara Monastery and the Green Gulch Zen Temple for fifteen years.  He is currently the head of Vimala Sangha meditation center in Mill Valley, California.  Earlier Lew was a software entrepreneur, former Executive Vice President of Smith and Hawken firm and the founding owner of Forerunner Systems, a leading provider of inventory management software.
 
He is the author of several books including “Work as a Spiritual Practice” and “A Whole Life’s Work”
 
His most recent book just published is “Aging as a Spiritual Practice: A Contemplative Guide to Growing Older and Wiser”

Anuradha Mittal is the founder and executive director of the Oakland Institute – a think tank promoting policies in social justice and the environment . She is an internationally renowned expert on trade, development, human rights and agriculture issues. She has received several awards and was named as the Most Valuable Thinker in 2008 by the Nation magazine.

Anu has authored and edited numerous books and reports including The Great Land Grab: Rush for World’s Farmland Threatens Food Security for the Poor; Voices from Africa: African Farmers and Environmentalists Speak out Against a New Green Revolution; The Future in the Balance: Essays on Globalization and Resistance.
She addressed the Congress, the United Nations, and has given several hundred keynote addresses including invitational events from governments and universities, and has been interviewed on CNN, BBC World, CBC, ABC, Al-Jazeera, National Public Radio and Voice of America.

Anuradha is on the board and advisory committees of several non profit organizations including the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize) and the International Forum on Globalization.

Guest: Dr. Gwynne Dyer

Dr. Gwynne Dyer is a world renowned military historian with a doctorate in Military and Middle Eastern History from Kings College in London and a past service record in the American, British and Canadian navies.  As a scholar, he has taught War Studies at the Royal Military Academy in the UK.  Dr. Dyer has been a syndicated columnist  for over 20 years, his writings appearing in over 175 newspapers and magazines in 45 countries.  His earlier book “War” was the basis for a television series aired on BBC and PBS.
 
In 2010, Dr. Dyer’s book “Climate Wars: The Fight for Survival as the World Overheats” was hailed by such people as James Lovelock , NASA’s chief scientist Dennis Bushnell, and Sr. Crispin Tickell (former president of the Royal Geographic Society) as a very viable scenario of dwindling food resources, starvation, mass migrations and a flurry of new military conflicts around the world.

Guest: Hans Herren

Dr. Hans Herren is an internationally respected scientist and the current President of the Millennium Institute in Washington DC – a research based think tank that develops strategies for the world to move towards economic equity and environmental sustainability.  In the past he has served as the director of the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology in Nairobi and the Africa Biological Control Center in Benin, Africa. He was responsible for saving the African cassava crop in 1995 which averted Africa’s worst ever food crisis.
 
Dr. Herren received his doctorate from the Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland and holds numerous awards – election to the US National Academy of Science, recipient of the World Food Award -- highest award given for advancing human development – the Tyler Awrd for Environmental Achievement and the Sir and lady Rank Prize for Nutrition awarded by then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Dr. Herren’s current focus is on promoting agroecology as the among the most important means for feeding the world and is currently responsible for saving millions of African lives.

Guest: Jim Gottstein

Jim Gottstein is the president and co-founder of the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights in Alaska, whose mission is to mount a campaign against forced psychiatric drugging and electroshock treatment in the US, with an emphasis on the rapid rise in forced drugging of children.  His winning the Alaska Supreme Court case in 2006 against the Alaska Psychiatric Institute was a landmark ruling for forced drugging procedures as unconstitutional.  He was responsible for the release of the Zyprexa Papers that resulted in a call for a Congressional investigation and led to Zyprexa’s maker Eli Lilly pleading guilty and paying $1.4 billion in civil and criminal fines.
 
As a humanitarian for promoting mental health and its alternative treatments, Jim is the co-founder of Soteria Inc that provides alternative non-drug alternatives to psychiatric hospitalization; is the co-founder of Choices Inc and Peer Properties Inc that run peer-run services, and formerly seved as on the Alaska Mental Health Board.

Guest: Lisa Graves

Lisa Graves is the Executive Director of the Center for Media and Democracy, the publisher of PR Watch, SourceWatch, and BanksterUSA. She previously served as a senior advisor in all three branches of the federal government, as a leading strategist on civil liberties advocacy, and as an adjunct law professor at one of the top law schools in the country. Her former leadership posts include:  a Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, Chief Counsel for Nominations for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and Senior Legislative Strategist for the American Civil Liberties Union (on national security and surveillance policies).  Lisa has testified as an expert witness before both the Senate and House and has frequently appeared as an expert across the different radio and television net works.

The Center for Media and Democracy recently obtained documents outlining about 800 bills, vetted and approved by major corporations along with Republican officials, who comprise the American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC.  It has been discovered that these bills are designed to rewrite state laws and target just about every area of American life – from education, union and worker rights, civil liberties, corporate oversight, health care, utilities, taxation – all which favor greater independence for the corporate regime and their domination over the privatization of people’s lives.

Dr. Michael Hudson is one of our nation’s important economists and Wall Street financial analysts. He is currently the President of The Institution for the Study of Long-Term Economic Trends and was the Chief Economic Policy Advisor for the Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s 2008 presidential campaign.  He is a research professor of economics at the University of Missouri at Kansas City and a research association at the Levy Economics Institute at Bard College. Dr. Hudson has served as an advisor to the White House, State and Defense departments at the Hudson Institute, in addition to the United Nations Institute where he became a specialist in global economics.
